I played the demo, like many of you, and I thought it was alright. Playing the full game in a friend's dorm room though I'm really starting to dislike it. It feels like they are artificially trying to up the difficulty, which is silly. Not to mention the art design is all over the place and in many places downright terrible.
The game play is fine, largely unchanged, and in a few ways, notably hammer on's and pull off's, a little bit better than in the past. But it feels like the game has lost it's charm from it's past iterations. For example, in Guitar Hero 2 the character's looked cartoony and over the top, but most importantly fun, like someone I would want to hang out with, or at east would respect. The new designs however look like they took a few to may hits on the crack pipe and need to go into rehab. But then again some of the characters look almost exactly like they did in the past game.
It's like they can't make up their minds. They don't know what they want to do, be gritty and edgy or fun and cartoony. The character designs really need a lot of work, the male singer for example looks more like a brute from halo 3, and don't even get me started on Johnny Napalm. And the level design isn't any better.
But like I said, the gameplay, which is what counts, is fine. If you like guitar hero you're gonna like this one too. There are nice additions like battle mode and online play, but these are really obvious, and show no innovation.
I'm really looking forward to Rock Band though. I think it's going to be something really special. I can't wait for 4 player co-op in the dorms. It's gonna be amazing.
Of course, if it ends up playing badly I'll go right back to Guitar Hero 3. But I don't see that happening, as I trust Harmonix to make a quality experience.
I also like the song selection a lot better in Rock Band, notably: Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet, and Here it Goes Again by Ok Go. Not that Guitar Hero 3 doesen't have good song. I love Paint It Black, Welcome to the Jungle, and many more, but i don't think it's quite as good. Oh, and one of my favorite songs in Guitar Hero 3, Anarchy in the UK by The Sex Pistols, is a terrible version of the song. Personal irk yes, but relevant none the less.
So, anyway, I might get GT3 later, like next year when it drops in price, but for now, I'll wait.
